PLACES AND OBJECTS

Large forest complexes, marvellous nature and diverse landscape make the forest district a perfect place for every tourist. One can see unusual natural monuments, valuable protected areas, park-like forest stands, richness of rare, protected and endangered species of flora and fauna, areas with inhabitants so unique that the lands were joined to the European NATURE 2000 network.

One of the precious areas within the forest district is the Oder Valley (Dolina Odry).  The lands hold plenty of habitats of protected animal species, especially bird species. The valley is a feeding ground of white-tailed eagle, harrier and kite; the habitat of beaver and otter. The importance of the valley was legitimised by creation of protected landscape area The Oder Valley of Krosno (Krośnieńska Dolina Odry) and two areas of the Nature 2000 network.

Just as interesting is the Ołobok Channel (Kanał Ołobok), which plays the role of a habitat corridor for many animal species. The bird species of the area are: bittern, little grebe, goldeneye, western marsh-harrier, water rail, kingfisher, river warbler and common rosefinch. The area is also a feeding ground of white-tailed eagle. In the waters rich with fish, one can see a beaver or an otter; and on the waterside - a badger.  The area has a very interesting flora. There are some fragments of riparian forests and large communities of water flora. Among the aquatic plants, one might be interested to see the communities of statiotes aloides, commonly known as water pineapple. The channel runs from Niesłysz Lake, to the south, through numerous ponds and lakes to flow into the Oder at a point located north-west of Czerwińsk. The watercourse is 29 kilometre-long. The waters are clear, which is confirmed by the occurrence of freshwater sponge. Along the river, one may observe the remains of fortification of the southern part of Międzyrzecz Fortification Region (Międzyrzecki Rejon Umocniony, MRU). The whole stretch of the Ołobok can be traversed by kayak. However, it is a demanding route, with a lot of overgrowth and many obstacles.

The third area to see for its diversity of natural habitats is the Obrzyca together with its channels.  The river and its artificial tributaries create conditions for development of interesting ecosystems connected to the water habitat.  It is also a habitat corridor for many animal species. The Obrzyca flows into the Oder near Górzykowo This precious fragment of the river is a place of avifauna concentration.

Two (kayak) waterways run through the area of the forest district:

  • from Sławskie Lake, through Konotop to Zbąszyśnkie Lake;
  • from Babimost, through Wojnowskie Lake and the Obrzyca, until it flows into the Oder.

For the benefit of tourists, objects such as car parks, stops, nature and education trails, hiking and cycling trails have been construct throughout the forest district.

Hiking trails:

  • the black trail runs from Radnica along the Jelito Lake in the direction of Gryżyna - through Gryżyna Landscape Park (Gryżyński Park Krajobrazowy)
  • the blue trail runs from Nietkowice, through Skąpe in the direction of the Ołobok;
  • the red trail runs from Trzebiechów, through Smolno Wielkie in the direction of Kargowa.

The trails are both, hiking and cycling trails. Their course has been chosen to allow the tourists to see the natural qualities of the area. Travelling through the trails, the tourists will encounter education trails, a nature reserve and natural monuments. The total length of hiking trails running through the Forest District equals 206.5 km.  Their exact route has been displayed in the general map of the natural and cultural qualities.
